Blog Post 7- Life is but a Netflix queue created by an idiot...

Lady Macbeth

New Girl (2011)

New Girl is a show about a girl who finds out that her boyfriend is cheating on her, so she decides to move into a new apartment with 3 guys that she doesn’t know. Jess, the main character, is a strong willed woman, but sometimes feels broken. Lady Macbeth could relate to Jess’ feelings because she is usually a tough, independent woman, but later on begins to feel damaged (the guilt of all of the murders causing her to want to kill herself).

CSI (2000)
CSI is a crime investigation show where the CSI quad members contribute their knowledge while analyzing small and precise materials involved in the crime. This show is perfect for Lady Macbeth because she could learn how to get away with all of her crimes. She could do this by learning what the CSI members look for, as well as different devious tricks and techniques from the criminals.

Gossip Girl (2007)

Gossip girl is a show about a group of "friends" and all of their drama and manipulations. Lady Macbeth would enjoy this show because of all the back stabbing and trickery that goes on since she is very manipulating of Macbeth. She would relate to the character of Blair the most because she seems to be the girl with the most power, but after a while her guilt begins to haunt her - just like it did with Lady Macbeth.

Mulan (1998)

Mulan, a classic Disney movie, is about a brave girl named Mulan. She was a tomboyish girl who disguises herself as a man so she can fight with the Imperial Chinese Army. Lady Macbeth would thoroughly enjoy this movie because she is very much like Mulan (brave, courageous, and tomboyish). She would also like this movie because it shows that girls can do anything that guys can do, it may just be in a different way.

Blog Post 6- Witch-slapped: Macbeth's fall from grace

1. Why do people who are not "evil" take the first step into evil? What, for instance, is involved in taking that first step "down the primrose path to the everlasting bonfire" (Macbeth, 2.3)? What are the consequences of the individual choosing evil (particularly the internal consequences)? Use examples from the text to support your opinion.

Most people who are not “evil” take the first step into being evil to fulfill a longing desire or receive pressure from an outside source. When an overall good person commits a horrific and wicked act, it usually can’t help but leave a lasting impression. The crime also tends to alter a person’s behavior and emotions. When reflecting on the awful act, a person either gets eaten alive by their own guilt or it becomes the first of many crimes that that person is a part of. This reaction is based off of the success and effectiveness of the original crime.

In Macbeth, we see both desire and pressure conveyed. After Macbeth learns that he will one day become king from the Weird Sisters, he can’t stop thinking about it. “All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter,” (Macbeth, 1.3).  He later decides to take matters into his own hands by killing the current king, Duncan. In addition to Macbeth’s desire to become king, we see his wife, Lady Macbeth, encouraging the murder. This encouragement helps Macbeth to justify the killing, as well as his strong desire to rule.

“…I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition, which o’erlaps itself and falls on th’ other-“ (Macbeth, 1.7). This quote justifies why Macbeth believes it is okay to murder Duncan by implying that his determination and ambition is simply too powerful to resist. Although this may seem a bit irrational, Macbeth uses it to help ease the guilt of committing this crime on an innocent person, like Duncan.

As the audience continues to read, they see Macbeth acknowledge the success and ease of Duncan’s murder which leads to more terrible crimes taking place. The good character of Macbeth displayed at the beginning of the play turns into a cruel individual as the play goes on. Different events later happen that we, as the audience, are disappointed to see Macbeth engage in as he begins his travel down the path of evil.

This picture  shows how the three witches seem to be plotting to destroy Macbeth even though their message seems promising.

Blog Post 5- #IBmakingart

The name of the art that I saw at the CAM is 89 Huicholes. The artist of this work is Santiago Sierra and was created in January of 2006. 89 Huicholes’ full size is 320 × 186 pixels and was created in Jelisco, Mexico.  The medium chosen by Sierra is very traditional. Even though photography is nothing new to us, knowing the context of the piece makes the vibe seem much more modern.

In this piece of art, all you can see is the back of many peoples’ heads, all in black and white. The images are of different members of the Huichol people. Huichol people are an indigenous group in Mexico, known to be poor and experience excessive amounts of discrimination towards their religion and ethnicity. Taking pictures of these people’s faces supposedly takes away a part of their soul, according to their beliefs. Knowing this, it becomes known why only the backs of people are shown. Represented in this artwork are numerous people wishing to keep their soul, as well as share their belief with others. When I first learned this, I was very intrigued by this information and was interested in the fact that the people shown in the photos are willing to share their beliefs and ideas.

Santiago Sierra, the artist, has a very unique style and technique that he displays in 89 Huicholes. He chooses to only use the colors black and white and to combine many individual pictures to create one large piece of art. The background for each person was a white or light grey color, perfect for highlighting the darker light on the person shown in the photo. By using only these two colors, the observer has a chance to look over the whole piece of art instead of having one thing draw their eye. This technique reinforces the idea of souls by using simple, eerie colors.

I believe that the meaning and significance of this piece is to share personal beliefs. Believing that their souls would be taken if a photo of their face was shared, informs others on the different customs and the culture of the Huichol people. The purpose of the piece is to note the discrimination that Huichol people have constantly faced. By choosing this group of people, Sierra is helping to show the effects of discrimination and make a name for these people.

Blog Post 4 - Victoria's Secret Deadly Sin; Pride

Author: Victoria™
Date: March 1st, 2010
Publication: No publication place provided

 Little Picture:
This advertisement is for Victoria’s Secret, specifically for their new multi-way and push-up bras. The text shows four models dressed in what appears to be part of the new VS collection with a caption of “I love my body”. The background of this advertisement is all grey and then a lighter grey/ white color behind the models, enhancing the lighting and drawing your eye directly to them.  The colors presented in this text are mostly neutral colors with an occasional pop of bright pink, adding excitement and pizazz to the ad.

Big Picture:
When looking at this advertisement from a more meticulous perspective, one of the seven deadly sins is quite obviously displayed. The deadly sin shown in this text is pride. Pride is defined as a feeling of deep pleasure resulting from one's own achievements and from qualities or possessions that are widely admired by others. It seems very evident as though the models in the text have been photo-shopped to enhance beauty, as well as body size, but even knowing this, girls still strive for a body similar to one of the ones shown. By having the caption “I love my body” it becomes clear that the models admire their own body and hope that others do the same, so that they will be persuaded into buying a VS bra.

Intended Audience:
The intended audience for this particular text would be females, specifically from around the ages of 15 to 25. During these ages, females care most about what their body looks like and this advertisement for new VS bras persuades buyers to purchase these items to perhaps have a similar body to the ones displayed in the text. Their social and economic background usually has to be pretty good considering VS bras run at around $50 a piece. This piece of information could also be considered cultural knowledge because knowing the price and quality of VS goods applies to the awareness of the company and products.

Blog Post 2 - "What's in a Name?"

My mom liked the name Sarah throughout her childhood. Not knowing whether I was a boy or a girl at birth, my mom was pleasantly surprised to have a girl and to finally use the name Sarah.  The name Sarah means “lady” or “princess” in Hebrew and it was also Abraham’s wife in The Old Testament. This name became most popular in the United States between the years of 1980 and 2000 and most popular in North Carolina in the late 1990’s. I believe that the name Sarah defines me to a certain extent since it means princess. I do not consider myself a princess, but I do incorporate the word with being a positive, determined, and composed young lady.

I consider myself an individual most of the time as very few people have the name, Sarah Grace Cox. I feel as though this name belongs to me and only me, even though in reality it probably doesn’t. Very rarely do I go to school and sit in a classroom where I am the only Sarah. Knowing that there is another Sarah in the class makes me feel a bit less like an individual and more like just a part of a larger whole. There are two Sarah’s in my Spanish class, as one goes my “Sarah” and another by “Sarita”. Knowing that I am the only “Sarita” in the class makes the feelings of being part of a whole lessen and the feeling of being an individual grow, even though it is not my birth name. I believe that it is important to be an individual, but I also believe that learning to be a part of a larger whole isn’t always a horrific thing.

Blog Post 1 - From The Archive

The photograph above is titled From the Archive. This photograph was taken by Wing Young Huie between the years of 1997-2000 in Lake Street, USA. This black and white photo shows five men standing in a line in which four of these men are Caucasian, the fifth being Asian. These men are standing at a crosswalk in front of Gap in what seems to be a big shopping area. Looking deeper into this picture, we realize that the Asian man and is mimicking the posture and gestures of the fourth, Caucasian, man by putting his hands on his hips. This shows how white men are considered higher than others and how the “others” want to be in control or be considered to have just as much power as a white man.  In The Handmaid’s Tale, by Margaret Atwood, “othering” is presented in a similar way as displayed in the picture. Atwood displays Offred as a character that struggles to fit in with society since women are valued much less than men, just like Asians are compared to whites.  Some readers might relate to Offred by feeling like a stranger to their community, while others could feel detached from her because of their dedication to the fit in with the culture displayed in their surrounding environment.
